The tale of a little fledgling Grey Lourie

In September 2009 I was quietly sitting inside the house when I heard a commotion outside, and I saw my dogs pawing at something on the ground. As I have had experience with my dogs grabbing mice and birds before, I ran outside to go and help whatever was facing their clutches at that point again! On the ground was a little baby grey lourie, or some form of a mousebird, I thought at first glance. He wasn't injured too badly as far as I could see but I brought him inside and put him inside my parrot's travel cage to calm him down. I was more worried that the little bird was in a state of shock as we all know that shock is the danger in situations such as those.

I left him in there for a little bit while I pondered helping him make it through the night. He was still a baby and I had no idea where his nest had been or the rest of his family. At closer inspection I saw that he was indeed a little grey lourie and my heart sang, because I have always had an affinity for these calling birds of the Bushveld and thought them beyond beautiful. Suddenly I had my own baby lourie and so I truly wanted him to make it through his first night and become strong and healthy and sound.

My brother got home as he was living with me at the time, and upon seeing the newly acquired member of the household just shook his head, as he knew that there would be a flood of tears the next morning should the little one not make it through the night. I got him out of the cage and tried feeding him a strawberry as I know the louries are mainly fruit-eaters. He gobbled up that strawberry! It was delicious, you could see the little wings flapping ecstatically and he was making baby sounds which probably meant something like 'yum yum, gimme more!'.

That night I put him next to my bed in the cage with lots of towels to keep him warm, and it was with trepidation that I peeked in the next morning to see whether he survived his first night. He sat there with big, bright eyes, hungry again and right as rain!

My brother named him Punkie, due to the grey lourie's upright fringe on the head when they are on the alert and he has now been with me for nearly 2 years. Punkie has a deformity on his legs which would make it impossible for him to land on a tree and hop from branch to branch as they do in the wild. He can fly, but when I take him outside of his cage, he flies beautifully although he prefers to fly around the house once whereafter he seeks me out and finds a spot on me to sit and then fall asleep. He loves feeding time, which is more or less the whole day! I have never seen a little bird eat as much as this little one, but I adore him, he is the sweetest little soul, always happy when he sees a special treat. He flaps his little wings and emits a chirping sound when he sees an especially yummy treat and he loves to bathe himself.

My dad built him a special cage that enables him to sit outside when the weather is nice and warm and he can view the garden and take a bath and look at the other birds. He listens to the African Grey and although it breaks my heart to know that he will never be able to return to the wild, I know that he is happy and healthy with me and that is as it should be.

  2. Hi Gina! This is brilliant news that you also found a baby lourie! Remarkable and I am so happy that yours is doing well! Can you see if it was hurt at all, if not you can always take it through to FREE ME, it's a bird sanctuary on the road to Sunninghill and they take them in. Mine is deformed and I feel too sorry for my baby to give him away. He eats all sorts of fruits, and I am sure yours has developed a taste for the sweetness of the apple and the paw paw, there is nothing wrong with that. I just felt that he needed all the help he could get and being a baby, would also need protein. So, boil an egg for your baby and then feed him the white, you will see they simply love it. I also feed him white chickenmeat (no skin of course) and this has all the protein they would require. They love banana, so continue with that if you can and also strawberries, grapes and lo and behold, BREAD! He LOVES his bread, but you have to break down everything into bite size morsels. I also feed him oats in the mornings which he ADORES! Warm oats, slightly sweetened. Then your little bird should grow up healthy and strong! PLEASE let me know how he goes on! Warm regards!

  3. Hi Anya
No she is not hurt luckily. She was just cold and hungry. I warmed her up and fed her and she started cleaning her feathers straight away, which was a major relief. I've had many baby birds to look after we have pigeons and canaries so I know a bit about birds, I’ve just never had a Lourie, didn’t even know a lot about them. So had to do some serious research  Yes I was concerned about there being no protein in her diet so I will defiantly try egg and chicken. Is Punkie fussy it all because Charlie, that’s her name, is very fussy even though she is hungry enough to try eat my finger sometimes won’t eat the fruit, and I run out of ideas on what to give her. But I will try the oats and bread and let you know how it goes.
    Thanks for your help...

  7. Thank you so much for this information. I found a baby who fell out a tree a few months ago after some heavy winds in my area. I am happy to report that he is alive and well and that this blog helped to make that possible. All the information is true (mine also likes sitting on the bloody laptop. I have found that he likes all the fruit mentioned, but only eats them when cut up, also enjoys some boiled vegetables. Like the one in the blod, he's also willing to try anything at least once. Being a generalist eater, lots of random weeds and invasives from the garden. Goes crazy for morning glory flowers and rose petals. I havent tried roast chicken or egg white though, but I'll throw in a snail next time I find one. Surprisingly, he likes eating the leaves of my plum and nectarine trees... Weird... A surprising behavior I've noticed is that he absolutely hates hadedas (Spelt right??). So why does the hadeda make its sound? My old boss told me its because they're scared of heights. I think he's right... Nonetheless, my little grey bird hates it when hadedas go at it. He can't really fly unfortunately. I was initially hoping he could be a nice rehab project. Now one classification is a "pet", although I would prefer to consider him a glorified freeloader who lives here by his own "choice", if birds can have such things. Basically I built the cage, he decided to stay. And by being laid and hatched on my land, Natural law leads me to believe that he has the right to stay and live on this land. That should avoid any legal skirmishes with the God awful people that run South Africa. I hope that this information will prove useful to the next lucky soul who finds one of these little rascals fall out a tree. Very affectionate, very sweet little friend. No wild bird deserves to die at the mouth of a cat just because it fell out the tree too early. If you find one, help it out and you'll be rewarded with a loverly friend. At least take it to freeme, wings or another organization that can rehabilitate it.
